Dark Horse Records hat mit „Joe Strummer 003: The 101’ers Years (1974–1976)“ die bisher umfassendste Sammlung der Aufnahmen von Joe Strummers Pre-Clash-Band The 101’ers angekündigt. Das Werk erscheint am 20. November 2026 und dokumentiert die frühesten bekannten Aufnahmen des späteren Clash-Frontmanns an der Schnittstelle zwischen der Londoner Pub-Rock-Szene und der aufkommenden Punk-Revolution.
Die von David Zonshine produzierte und von Paul Hicks (bekannt durch Arbeiten für The Beatles, David Bowie und The Rolling Stones) remasterte Sammlung wird als Deluxe-Boxset auf 3 CDs sowie als Doppel-LP veröffentlicht. Als Vorgeschmack ist der von Paul Hicks neu abgemischte Song „Keys To Your Heart (2026 Mix)“ bereits als Stream verfügbar.
Unveröffentlichtes Material und aufwendige Restauration
Das 3CD-Set umfasst insgesamt 48 Tracks. CD 1 enthält die Studioaufnahmen der Band, inklusive ausgewählter neuer Abmischungen. CD 2 bündelt Demos und Aufnahmen aus dem Bandkeller, darunter das Solo-Stück „Full Moon“, das Strummer im besetzten Haus der Band im Westen Londons aufnahm. CD 3 widmet sich Live-Aufnahmen – unter anderem mit frühen Versionen von „Junco Partner“ (später von The Clash gecovert) und „Lonely Mother’s Son“, einer Frühform des Titels „Jail Guitar Doors“. Die Demos und Live-Mitschnitte wurden von Paul Hicks auf Basis der originalen Kassetten und Mischpult-Aufnahmen restauriert.
Eingebettet ist die CD-Edition in ein 48-seitiges gebundenes Buch im Schuber. Dieses bietet ein Vorwort von Sex-Pistols-Bassist Glen Matlock, eine von Bandmitglied Richard Nother Dudanski verfasste Bandhistorie sowie seltene Bilder, Illustrationen und Texte von Joe Strummer selbst. Die Doppel-LP-Variante bündelt die sämtlichen Studioaufnahmen auf der ersten Schallplatte und zeigt auf der zweiten Scheibe Highlights der Demos und Keller-Tapes.
Von Squat-Gigs zur Punk-Revolution
The 101’ers benannten sich nach ihrer Hausbesetzer-Adresse in der 101 Walterton Road in Maida Vale. Musikalisch verband die Formation Rock ’n’ Roll, R&B und Rockabilly. Strummer blickt auf die Entstehung der Band in der Hausbesetzer-Szene zurück:
„The Labour government introduced the Rent Act in 1965. Its purpose was to protect tenants in rented accomodation. Unfortunately, it backfired as most laws do – and the result was landlords found a loophole and switched to short lets, which were not covered. There were thousands of empty houses in London and the councils actually employed gangs to come in and smash up these lovely Victorian houses, remove floorboards, rip out wiring, destroy the plumbing so squatters couldn’t live in them. Now being homeless, I ran into some old friends who were squatting on West 9. Within about a year I had formed a band in a squat. It was named ‚The 101’ers‘ after our address (Walterton Road, Maida Vale). We ran a club every Wednesday in the upstairs room of a pub. Entry fee: 10p“
Nach gemeinsamen Auftritten mit den Sex Pistols im April 1976 wendete sich Strummer zunehmend der Energie des Punk zu. Am 5. Juni 1976 spielten The 101’ers ihr letztes Konzert – im Publikum saßen bereits Strummers spätere Bandkollegen Mick Jones und Paul Simonon.
